Moon
And Stars
(Iqbal’s Chaand Aur Taare)
Afraid of the hiss of the dawn,
The stars started to say to the moon:
“Features in the sky are the same,
We have been tired of the gleam,
Whether it is dusk or dawn,
We are moving on and on,
Nothing is peaceful in this universe,
Where is that we call peace?
All are in journey with a burden,
The stars, the trees, the
stones and the men,
Will this journey ever end?
Shall we ever see the end?”
The moon said, “ Companions!
O the crop pickers of the nightly season!
Motion is the life of the world,
This has been a custom very old,
The steed of the time can never sit,
As it is flogged by the need,
No stoppage in the way,
Rest is buried in decay,
Who had been moving described the way,
Whoever paused was crushed away,
The fate of this motion is grace,
Beginning is love and end is
grace.
